Belgium: Statistics on jobseekers from Ukraine

Flag of Belgium

Since February 2022 over 1 300 Ukrainians have registered as job-seekers in the Brussels region, over 3 000 in Flanders and 1 200 in Wallonia. Approximately 80% of them are women, and a large majority is aged under 49.

Over half (55%) declare they have at least a basic level of English, and one in five say they have some knowledge of French. Brussels employment agency Actiris emphasises the importance of learning French, Dutch or English immediately on arrival in Belgium, and provides support for people to do so. With the recent wave of new arrivals from Ukraine it has granted 280 language vouchers entitling Ukrainian jobseekers to free Dutch, English or French lessons, 86% of which are for French lessons.

The Brussels Regional Employment Office indicates that these jobseekers from Ukraine, in almost 7 out of 10 cases, have a higher education diploma (which is, in most cases, not recognised in Belgium).  About 10% have experience in administrative positions, and a further 10% in security or cleaning services. Other previous experience includes management (8%), trade and sales (7%), economics and law (7%), catering (7%) and transport and logistics (6%).

It is yet difficult to determine how many applicants from Ukraine have found a job in Belgium, since the follow-up generally takes several months. The VDAB - a Flemish employment agency - said that 14 326 Ukrainians of working age have registered in Flemish cities and municipalities and that it remains to be seen whether this group is willing or able to work: "Possible reasons not to do so are illness, psychological trauma or taking on a care task. 10 380 of the 14 326 displaced persons from Ukraine in Flanders are women. As a single parent, they often have to handle childcare themselves," said VDAB spokeswoman Joke Van Bommel.
