Sweden: Extension of temporary protection measures for Ukrainian nationals in Sweden

The Swedish Government extended the possibility of obtaining a residence permit with temporary protection under the EU Temporary Protection Directive, primarily focusing on Ukrainian citizens legally residing in Sweden who have yet to receive formal protection status. This legislative amendment officially came into effect on 22 December 2023.

At a press conference announcing the development, Minister for Migration Maria Malmer Stenergard emphasised the need to continue accommodating individuals from Ukraine in Sweden, given the ongoing war in Ukraine. Consequently, more Ukrainian nationals in need of protection will now be afforded the opportunity to remain in Sweden with temporary protection status.

The activation of the Temporary Protection Directive, initiated by the Council of the European Union on 4 March 2022 in response to the conflict in Ukraine, paved the way for certain Ukrainian citizens and their families to receive temporary refuge in Sweden and other member states of the EU. Subsequently, a legislative amendment in April 2022 extended this protection to include individuals who arrived in Sweden on or after 30 October 2021.

Prior to these adjustments, some individuals risked being denied protection and subsequently having to return to their homeland. In recognition of these challenges, the Swedish Government enacts this new legislative amendment to facilitate the retention of vulnerable individuals within Sweden.
