Flag of Slovakia

The National Institute for Education and Youth in Slovakia, an official educational body at the national level which also addresses issues of inclusion and support for national minorities, announced the continuation of its "Support for Refugees from Ukraine in Education" project with UNICEF until 31 December 2024.

The project, launched in 2023, provides comprehensive support to children and young people displaced from Ukraine who are now living in Slovakia. It focuses on creating opportunities for quality and inclusive education, thereby contributing to their better integration into the Slovak education system and society.

The project's main activities include:

  • counseling and support for schools in various regions;
  • professional development support for educational institutions, teachers, and directors focusing on the integration of Ukrainian children and students;
  • expert activities aimed at early and pre-primary education (development of methodologies and training);
  • implementation of language courses for educational staff from Ukraine (courses were conducted in 2023);
  • distribution of language publications;
  • provision of psychological and interpreting support.

The project's support is built around directly targeted assistance in schools, allowing for responses to schools' individual needs in various regions and systematic coordination of aid with specific municipalities. This ensures the flexibility of measures and more targeted support. Direct support for schools is provided by regional methodology specialists who operate in the various regional offices of the National Institute for Education and Youth (NIVaM) located in Bratislava, Košice, Trnava, and Trenčín.
