Through its nationwide 'Fair Act of the Year' competition, Nadácia zastavme korupciu (the Stop Corruption Foundation) honours young people who actively contribute to solving societal problems and, for the first time, in 2023 there is focus on migrant integration. This reflects a national trend of increased visibility and understanding of the topic of migrant integration in Slovakia.
This year's winner is Ukrainian student Danyil Tsybulko, a migrant himself, who founded NGO Metoikos to facilitate the integration of young migrants studying in Slovakia. In addition to a commemorative prize, Tsybulko wins non-financial prizes including enrolment in an individualised mentoring programme focused on personal development.
Metoikos supports migrant students, both third-country nationals and EU nationals, in tackling the problems and overcoming the barriers they face in everyday life in Slovakia. It does this through counseling services provided at Trnava University, assistance with practical issues such as organising health insurance and filing tax returns, and conversation evenings that provide a space for young migrants to connect and develop relationships with members of the majority population. The prize offers the opportunity to expand these activities further, reaching more people.
