Slovakia: Improvements to service networks for third-country nationals

Flag of Slovakia

Slovakia has faced a lack of service infrastructure for third-country nationals (TCNs) over the last two decades, particularly at the local level, but is now undergoing remarkable development in this area.

Since 2022 the country has seen substantial growth in its migrant population (currently representing over 5% of the total population), primarily due to the arrival of large numbers of people displaced by the ongoing war in Ukraine. This has led to greater focus on services for TCNs. Many non-governmental organisations have expanded their operations and opened new facilities across different regions, and correspondingly public awareness of the migrant population has increased.

In tandem with these developments, public authorities have also been establishing municipality-run integration centres. Following on from the opening of the first such centre in Nitra (COMIN) in December 2020, two are now running in in Bratislava and Košice, and this month the local authority in Trnava opened the country's biggest centre (ConnectTT). Trnava is one of the largest cities in the country and home to almost 7 000 migrants.

The centre in Trnava aims to provide a safe space for migrants and refugees, offering all the necessary information and services needed for adaptation and integration, following the example of good practices observed in other countries experienced in migrant integration. Available services - offered not only in Slovak but also in Ukrainian, Russian, and English - include language courses, bridging courses, vocational training, legal and social counseling, and general support with the integration process. A specific category of activities includes the organisation of community events aimed at promoting social cohesion at the local level.
