Romania: New project for the protection of unaccompanied migrant children

Flag of Romania

Terre des Hommes Romania and the Jesuit Refugee Service recently launched a new project supporting vulnerable migrant children. The project, which will run until December 2023, aims to secure the fundamental rights of unaccompanied migrant children and young people and their access to public services.

The PROMISE project is built around core legal services that range from provision of rights information to free legal assistance and representation. It also includes a capacity-building component for children and young people, which will encourage and support them in standing up for their rights and participating in consultative and decision-making processes.

To achieve its objectives the project team will work with migrant communities, public agencies and other stakeholders to ensure that the project reflects these children's best interests in terms of policy, legislation, and practice. The following results are expected:

  • Approximately 500 migrant children and young people aged 12 - 26 will be supported in their access to fundamental rights and public services
  • At least 1 000 migrants will be better informed of their rights
  • Approximately 50 lawyers, law students, representatives of institutions and organisations active in minors’ issues, as well as legal representatives for unaccompanied children, will be involved in the project
  • A consultative forum for migrants in Romania will be held, with 10 representatives of migrant communities.

Project activities will take place across several cities and towns in Romania: Timișoara, Baia Mare and  Somcuta-Mare, Rădăuți, Giurgiu, Arad, Otopeni, Galați, Constanța, Brăila, Tulcea, Vrancea, Bacău, Vaslui, and București.

The project is funded through the Active Citizens Fund Romania programme, as part of the EEA & Norway Grants 2014-2021.
