A new programme of language courses in Portuguese - Português Língua de Acolhimento - were established with an ordinance published in the Portuguese State Gazette on 5 August. This new language training has been adjusted to specific learning needs of migrants as a way to promote social inclusion and cohesion.
The ordinance brings significant changes to the resources available, increasing the number of classes and venues available, adding also the Qualifica centres to the network of state-run schools and vocational training centres.
In addition to this change, the ordinance introduces other innovations. These include: the involvement of migrant associations and other relevant partners in referring trainees through the High Commission for Migration (ACM), a decrease in both the minimum and maximum number of students per training group, and the greater adaptability of the hours of the courses to the different individuals' needs.
This legislative initiative is part of a revision of the 'Portuguese for All' program, measure of the National Plan for the Implementation of the Global Pact on Migration, approved through a Council of Ministers Resolution no. 141/2019 on 20 August 2019.
