The number of immigrant students in Portuguese schools has increased by 160% over the last 5 years, according to data from recently published OECD report 'Education at a Glance 2024'. The national Ministry of Education is preparing a set of mechanisms for schools to better promote the integration of these children and young people.
In 2019, there were approximately 53 000 foreign students in Portuguese schools, accounting for 5.3% of the total number of students enrolled. Lat year there were 140 00, representing 13.9% of the total number of students, according to data presented in the OECD report.
During a presentation event held for the report, the Minister of Education highlighted this increase as 'one of the major challenges in education', noting that the overall downward trend in the number of students in Portuguese schools has been interrupted by the increasing number of migrant students. Over the last 2 years alone, more than 70 000 new students enrolled in schools: 39 500 in the 2022 - 2023 academic year and 33 500 in 2023 - 2024. One of the biggest obstacles facing teachers, the minister added, is the fact that 25 - 30% of new students do not speak Portuguese.
