This initiative celebrated across the country dates back to 2010 when it brought together dozens of associations, NGOs, local authorities and a variety of agencies working towards equality in every social field. The 2017 edition of the Municipal Day for Equality saw the participation of close to 170 initiatives organised by more than 230 organisations in 77 municipalities, under the motto "Equality is Development".

With the aim of strengthening the theme of equality among local communities, this year's National Agenda included a number of activities particularly oriented towards migrants. It was the case for the language workshop: "Equality as I speak it", organised by the municipality of Alcanena in cooperation with the Association for the Integrated Development of Northern Ribatejo, as well as for the “March for diversity" in the municipality of Lousã.
