The Portuguese government will invest 2.5 million EUR from the Portuguese Tourism Agency's budget in providing training for migrants, including refugees, in the hotel and tourism industries.
The Ministry of Economy announced that the first phase of training will include approximately 1 000 people, and that the training will be run through the tourism schools network. Professional internships will be offered by enterprises that join the programme. The idea is to welcome professionals and non-professionals to a project of training and integration, thereby contributing to the improvement of integration conditions for refugees and migrants and to prepare skilled workers for these sectors.
A specific goal of the initiative is to offer training to young people from the community of Portuguese-speaking countries (Brazil, Cape Verde, Angola, and others).
According to Statistics Portugal, in March 2024 there were almost 360 000 people employed in accommodation and restaurant services, a crucial economic sector for the national economy.
