The Polish government approved a new bill, with changes to take effect from March 2023, stating that Ukrainian citizens staying in collective accommodation centres will be required to contribute to accommodation and food costs after an initial period of four months. According to official announcements, the aim of this new cost-sharing obligation is to promote the social activation of refugees that have fled Ukraine.
Those who have been living in Poland for more than 120 days must now cover 50% of their living expenses (at a cost of no more than PLN 40 per person per day; approximately 8.00 EUR), while those who have been staying for more than 180 days must cover 75% (at a cost of no more than PLN 60 per person per day; approximately 12.00). Only those who are unable to take up employment - for example due to disability, age, a precarious living situation, pregnancy or childcare duties - are to be exempt.
According to OECD estimates, by the end of 2022 Poland will have spent almost EUR 8.36 billion on support for those fleeing Ukraine.
