Poland: New migrant integration unit

Flag of Poland

The new government of Poland, which took office in December 2023, established the Department of Social Integration - within the Ministry of Family, Labour and Social Policy - which deals mainly with the integration of immigrants.

According to the relevant organisational regulation of the ministry adopted in January 2024, the new department is responsible for 'defining directions for activities and for implementing tasks in the field of integration of foreigners, preparing standards in the above area, and monitoring the implemented solutions'.

The department's main areas of activity include:

  • serving as the leading institution in the area of immigrant integration in Poland;
  • coordinating tasks in immigrant integration;
  • performing tasks related to the implementation of individual integration programmes for refugees and foreigners granted subsidiary protection;
  • performing tasks related to the implementation of the Asylum, Migration and Integration Fund;
  • cooperating on social integration, particularly with voivodeship offices, poviat centres for family support, regional social assistance centres and non-governmental organisations.

One of the most important tasks of the new integration unit for the near future will be to create a network of Foreigners' Integration Centres (Centra Integracji Cudzoziemców) throughout Poland. Currently, six such centres operate as pilots in two provinces: Opolskie and Wielkopolskie.
