People displaced from Ukraine in Poland - who have arrived in large numbers in recent months - are facing difficulties in finding affordable rental accommodation, partly due to a scarcity of municipal housing. To address this problem in 2022, the ADRA Poland Foundation developed the 'Cash for Rent' programme.
The programme granted three months of financial support to refugees from Ukraine for the renting of a flat in Poland. In order to avoid the high concentration of people in certain areas, such as cities, as well as to avoid the higher rent prices of big cities, participating individuals were moved to different locations spread across the country.
Ukrainian citizens who arrived in Poland after 24 February 2022 were eligible for inclusion in the programme. To be granted financial assistance they were required to undertake certain activities outlined within their individual support plan: a contract aimed at promoting their social integration and overall independence, for example through learning the Polish language.
The programme ran until the end of 2022, distributing almost PLN 2 million (EUR 420 000) to over 1 600 people. The funding was provided through a grant from US organisation HIAS, which has been supporting refugees around the world for 130 years.
