In advance of the municipal elections taking place in Luxembourg on 13 June 2023, the department of integration launched a website as part of a campaign promoting the political participation of foreigners. As the country is home to a large number of migrants, their participation in these elections is crucial.
The website provides information on why voting is important, how to register to do so, eligibility, related news and answers to a range of common questions. It is available in 5 languages - French, German, English, Luxembourgish and Portuguese - and can be accessed here.
Both third-country and EU nationals can register to vote in municipal elections in Luxembourg, and there is no period of prior residence required to secure eligibility. A person must be aged 18 or above on the day of the election in order to vote, and registration must be completed at least 55 days before the day of the election. Registration is possible both online or at the town hall. Once a person has registered, voting is compulsory.
Foreign citizens who have lived in the municipality for at least 6 months can stand for election to all available positions, including that of mayor.
