Since February 2022 children who have been displaced from Ukraine and are now living in Latvia have been able to access state-funded Latvian language courses by enrolling in Latvian schools, where they learn the language alongside the regular educational programme.
Other than a few ad hoc language courses run independently, this has so far been the only language-learning option available for this group. A large number of these children have therefore not yet had the opportunity to access state-funded courses, due to the fact that rather than enrolling in Latvian schools many opt to continue studying online with schools based in Ukraine.
With this in mind, the Society Integration Foundation (Sabiedrības integrācijas fonds) – the state institution responsible for cultural orientation and language courses for Ukrainian civilians – made funding available for cultural orientation measures for Ukrainian civilians. Many of the organisations granted funds offer Latvian language courses designed for children. This represents a positive step forwards, although there remains need for more widespread targeted measures to increase Latvian language course availability.
