Ireland’s transport agencies have united to launch the biggest anti-racism campaign in Europe. More than 1,000 posters featuring multicoloured sweets alongside the slogan: “We’re all made of the same stuff” will be placed on busses and trains driving across the country for the next two weeks.
The campaign run in partnership with the Immigrant Council of Ireland and the Dublin City Council seeks to promote cultural diversity and “a message of zero tolerance” towards racism. It therefore encourages people to report any incident through stopracism@immigrantcouncil.ie or directly to the police, as despite the recorded rise of racist incidents in Ireland, most refugees and migrants choose not to report these crimes by fear of being considered troublemakers.
The State’s failure to introduce hate crime legislation also discourages people from reporting crimes, according to experts. Anne Graham, chief executive of Transport for Ireland, warned against complacency towards racism.
