Greece: Refugee children are on average 1.5 years out of school

Title

A representative of the Education Ministry told news outlet Kathimerini earlier this month that Greece plans to set up classes for children at refugee camps as of September. In the meantime, a new study by NGO Save the Children reveals that refugee children stranded in Greece are on average 1.5 years out of school.

The number is significantly higher for Syrian children who spent an average of 25.8 months without formal education while a afghan child stays 10.7 months out of the classroom. In general, more than one in five have never even begun their education.

Save the Children has however been providing non-formal language lessons (English and Greek) and is currently scaling up its activities to provide access to basic education through temporary classrooms.
