The HOME Project, an organisation providing shelter and support to refugee children, has announced a first-of-its-kind initiative to grant 18 young refugees in Greece full-time scholarships to attend American Community Schools of Athens (ACS Athens) during the 2018-2019 academic year. The refugee students, who will come from the HOME Project, will be enrolled in an inclusive educational programme at ACS Athens.
The students will take courses in English and Greek as foreign languages, mathematics, computers and arts subjects such as theater and music. The students will also be assessed at regular intervals throughout the academic year.
The scholarships are a collaboration between: the HOME Project, which currently houses over 220 refugee children in 11 shelters; the Shapiro Foundation, which funds various initiatives for refugees and will provide the funding for the ACS Athens scholarships; and ACS Athens. ACS Athens is a private international school teaching kindergarten through 12th grade with an American educational philosophy. Tuition and fees at ACS Athens are typically over 10,000 euros per academic year.
