Finland: Study 'Housing for Young People 2014' - Immigrant Youth in Weak Position

Title

This new study 'Dreams and Reality' looks at the position of young people between 18 to 29 years old in the housing market (their current housing and their housing-related plans, their problems and wishes). The material for the study was gathered through a national telephone survey aimed at young people. Thanks to previous similar studies carried out in 1991, 1995, 2005 and 2010, comparisons have been drawn on how youth housing has changed over time.

Besides, for the first time, this study looks at young people with immigrant backgrounds, and new topics are covered such as homelessness among young people, discrimination experienced by young people in the housing market and attitudes towards communal living.

The position of young people with immigrant background is weaker on the housing market than of the main population. When producing housing units meant for young people, the study recommends to think about the increasing number of immigrants, as well as their difficulties to get a private rental apartment or buying a home.

The study recommends to increase the number of housing units dedicated to young people, especially in the regiond of Helsinki and Tampere. According to population forecasts, the number of young people living in these areas will continue to increase, especially due to immigration, while the rental housing market is already very tight.
