Europe: Information to strengthen the health literacy of migrants

Logo

Migrants and refugees on the move are often not aware of their right to healthcare which is enshrined in several human rights instruments. To better inform them and help them reach out to services in destination or transit countries, Health Systems Navigation Guides are now available in Croatia, Greece, Italy, Malta and Slovenia.

The leaflets and booklets aiming at increasing the health literacy of migrants provide a list of offered services and doctors' contact information. The guides to be widely disseminated in reception centres and in relevant health access points contain information in English, the countries’ official languages and in common migrant languages, such as Arabic, Farsi or Tigrinya. To prepare this easy-to-use material, the most effective practices for increasing health literacy of migrants were studied.

This initiative is implemented within the framework of the project CARE  – Common Approach for Refugees and other migrants’ health which aims to promote a better understanding of refugees' and migrants’ health conditions, and to support appropriate clinical attitudes towards their specific health needs. Participating countries are those which have faced some of the greatest burden of the migration crisis. CARE is financed by the EU Health programme.
