This article provides an overview of new initiatives supporting the integration of newly arrived Ukrainian refugees into Czech society.
Education
- Newly created web portal Shkola allows Ukrainian families in the Czech Republic to find a kindergarten, primary or secondary school. The map shows schools that have vacancies and are ready to accept Ukrainian children. This project is a spontaneous initiative of ScioŠkola and the tech company Ximilar.
- The Women for Women association allows individual donors to contribute to the transparent account of the Lunch for Children initiative. These contributions are then used to provide free lunches for children in difficult social situations. The cost of one month of school lunches for one pupil is approximately 500 CZK (20 EUR).
- Some NGOs are making their educational or communication materials available for free (e.g. the package for teaching children from Ukraine by the Centre for Integration of Foreigners, and the online communication cards and picture dictionary by the Nová škola association) while others, such as the Meta Association, are providing methodological and informational support to teachers.
- The Moravian Library, in cooperation with the Municipal Library of Prague, launched a website which functions as a sharing platform, for the exchange of materials for working with Ukrainian children (such as stories, videos, teaching materials).
Healthcare
- Iniciativa Lékaři pro Ukrajinu is collecting the contact details of Czech doctors who are offering free help to Ukrainian citizens. The relevant site now lists several hundred doctors: these are mostly adult general practitioners, but more child and adolescent practitioners are being added, as well as gynaecologists and other specialists. For quick orientation, doctors are sorted by regions and districts.
- A number of organisations and initiatives (e.g. the Czech Psychology Network for Global Changes, the National Institute of Mental Health and the Sluchátko helpline) are offering free psychological help in Ukrainian.
- The Organization for Aid to Refugees has published a manual for volunteers and professionals, written from the perspective of psychotherapy, on how to talk to people affected by the war.
Employment
Some of the country's main job portals - such as job.cz and práce.cz - are also acknowledging the difficult situation of Ukrainians in that they now allow searching for vacancies that can be performed without knowledge of the Czech language. Job offers in Ukrainian are also being published on the website of the Ukrainian Initiative in the Czech Republic. Further, the Tech Resistance initiative is organising a collection of laptops, tablets, phones and other electronics via five collection points in Prague. The collected devices will be distributed to Ukrainian refugees through non-profit organisations to support them in learning Czech and securing employment.
