The Textbooks for Ukraine online portal is offering free Czech textbooks for teachers, pupils and students of all ages. The textbooks are primarily intended for schools and educational and recreational institutions, as well as associations, organisations and communities that implement adaptation or language programmes for refugees arriving from Ukraine. All Czech language textbooks will be available by the beginning of the new school year 2022/2023.
The initiative is a collaboration between the Ministry of Education, the PPF Foundation and The Kellner Family Foundation, which supported it with CZK 100 million (approx. EUR 4 million). It is a response to the issue of no centralised system for the distribution of textbooks in the Czech Republic, and the fact that so far the demand for educational materials for teaching Czech to foreigners has been marginal. As a result, teaching materials are not available on the market in the necessary quantities. The initiative has succeeded in ordering larger quantities of paper, allocating the necessary printing capacities and defining a set of existing textbooks to be printed. The Textbooks for Ukraine website operates like an e-shop, but those interested in the learning materials can access them for free.
A completely new set of teaching material designed to meet the needs of Ukrainian citizens has also been developed by the National Pedagogical Institute (NPI). It is intended for all Ukrainian beginners in the Czech language, and focuses on everyday topics that language users are guaranteed to encounter while living in the country. The material is free to download.
