Croatia: Promotion of refugee integration through football

Flag of Croatia

The Croatian Football Federation and the Centre for Cultural Dialogue signed an agreement on cooperation and the donation of financial resources to the New Neighbours project. The project, run by the Centre for Cultural Dialogue, promotes the integration of refugees in Croatia through football.

The donation was supported by the Union of European Football Associations (UEFA). Refugee children will now be able to regularly take part in extracurricular football activities, as well as an extracurricular programme that will help them to fulfill their school obligations and learn the Croatian language and relevant football terminology. The donation will also cover the cost of football club membership fees and basic training equipment for refugee children, and for adults with international protection status it will cover the cost of football training, language learning and football club registration.

The Centre for Cultural Dialogue has been running the New Neighbours project since 2019, in cooperation with the Ministry of the Interior of the Republic of Croatia. It promotes the comprehensive integration of persons with international protection into Croatian society, through the provision of active integration support as well as by sensitising and raising awareness among relevant stakeholders (such as public officials, the media and communities hosting those granted international protection).
