Bulgaria: First protected housing service for unaccompanied asylum seeking minors

Flag of Bulgaria

The first Bulgarian protected housing service for unaccompanied asylum seeking minors was opened in Sofia’s Oboriste District. The space will offer:

  • accommodation;
  • meals;
  • Bulgarian language classes;
  • legal, social and psychological support for unaccompanied children who are migrants or asylum seekers.

The service is designed to feel like “home” and can accommodate up to 10 children at a time. The project should be seen in the light of the steady increase of unaccompanied minors who seek asylum in Bulgaria – 3 172 in 2021 (compared with 10 999 asylum applications overall in 2021) and 3 348 in 2022 (compared with 20 407 asylum applications overall in 2022).

The project is run by the Bulgarian Red Cross in partnership with Sofia’s Oboriste District and UNHCR. It is financed by the Kingdom of Norway under the Norwegian Financial Mechanism 2014-2021 under the "Home Affairs" programme.
