Flag of Austria

ZARA - Civil Courage and Anti-Racism-Work is an Austrian NGO, founded in 1999, that provides counselling to victims and witnesses of racist incidents.

In its annual racism report, ZARA publishes information on a broad selection of racist incidents from all spheres of life in Austria, taken from those reported to the NGO in the previous year. This report from 2021 includes 29 anonymised case reports of racist incidents that occurred:

  • on the internet;
  • in the public sphere;
  • in relation to access to goods and services;
  • within administrative public bodies;
  • in politics and the media;
  • at the hands of the police;
  • in relation to work and employment.

The report - published in both German and English - offers a reflection of Austrian society, giving an indication of the everyday racism that confronts migrants in the country.
