The Ministry of the Interior of the Czech Republic, in cooperation with other ministries, published a report on the migration and integration of foreigners on the territory of the Czech Republic in 2021. The report provides detailed information on legal and illegal migration, international protection and the integration of foreigners in 2021, and compares certain indicators with those from 2020 or previous years, thereby conveying the basic migration trends in the Czech Republic.

In 2021, as in the previous year, migration was affected by the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic. Despite this, the number of foreigners living legally in the Czech Republic continued to increase, with the migration of foreign workers being the main long-term contributor. The structure of foreigners in terms of nationality has been relatively stable in the long term: most foreigners come from Ukraine, Slovakia and Vietnam.

There has been a significant increase in illegal migration to the Czech Republic, mainly due to foreigners entering the country in violation of the protection measures of the Ministry of Health. More migrants also travelled through the country due to the development of migratory movements along the Balkan migration route: the Czech Republic remains primarily a transit country for illegal migration from refugee-producing countries. In terms of beneficiaries of international protection, the most frequent applicants were citizens of Ukraine, Georgia and Afghanistan. In particular, the evacuation of Afghan citizens from Afghanistan in 2021 caused the number of applicants in the Czech Republic to increase by approximately 20% in comparison with the previous year.
