According to this study conducted by the National Bank of Poland, the economic situation of Belarusian migrants in Poland varies, with those of Polish descent who hold a Polish Card or Polish citizenship tending to have an easier experience. They are found in general to have a better command of the Polish language, their residency status is more stable, and they find it easier to secure employment. Other differentiating factors include the date of arrival in Poland and a person's gender: those who arrived after 2019 and those who are women tend to face more challenges.
Among the Belarusian respondents, 16% were unemployed. Many are filling gaps in the Polish labour market by working in sectors dominated by men, such as manufacturing, transportation, IT, and construction. A significant proportion of IT professionals (13%) and entrepreneurs are likely connected to the "Poland: Business Harbour" programme, which provided various incentives to help these groups relocate to Poland.
When asked about the type of support needed, the most common response was easier legalisation of residency. People of Polish descent, though, said that their most pressing need was help with finding employment.
Belarusian immigrants primarily come to Poland due to the political situation in their home country, with economic reasons being a secondary factor. The majority report being satisfied with their life in Poland, and 68% said they wish to settle in Poland or stay for more than 1 year.
The study was conducted among Belarusian immigrants between 15 April and 5 July 2024 in six voivodeships, with a sample of 775 respondents. This is the first pilot survey by the National Bank of Poland focused on this immigrant group.
