This recent study provides an overview of sports-related projects and interventions aimed at the social inclusion of migrants. The study is based on the examination of more than 60 examples and concludes that integration through sport is successful if activities include or foster:
- a positive societal context,
- the creation of ownership for the programmes,
- the opportunity for cultural exchange and learning,
- the development of pathways into volunteering and skills acquisition,
- the enhancement of cultural sensitivity.
Furthermore, stakeholder interviews as well as project reports and the available research suggest a need for improvement and support at a variety of levels, in particular:
- funding structures, including information and knowledge about them among volunteer-led and grassroots level initiatives,
- data collection to provide supporting information for monitoring and evaluation,
- exchange of knowledge and dissemination of best practices in a very diverse and fragmented sector, EU-wide but also through local partnerships.
