In July, the General Directorate for Immigration and Integration of the Ministry of Labour and Social Policies in Italy published a series of reports on the most 'representative' migrant communities living in Italy, and a comparative report summarising the main findings of each individual report.
Among the main findings of this comparative report is the fact that the third-country national (TCN) population in Italy is significantly younger than the Italian population. There are 767 809 minors in this group, representing 20.6% of the legal resident population, compared with 15% among the native population. There are significant differences between communities within this: the proportion of minors is highest among the Egyptian, Moroccan, Nigerian and Tunisian communities, and lowest among the Moldovan, Filipino, Peruvian and Senegalese communities.
According to the report, the majority (60.1%) of TCN citizens in Italy are long-term residents. The proportion of long-term residents is highest in the Moldovan (85%), Ecuadorian (77.7%), Filipino (70.2%), Moroccan (69.5%), Tunisian (69.7%) and Sri Lankan (69.1%) communities, and lowest in the Nigerian (36.1%), Pakistani (47.5%) and Ukrainian (47.4%) communities. In 2022 alone, there were 194 071 acquisitions of Italian citizenship by citizens of non-EU origin, representing a significant increase (+87.5%) since 2021. The main countries of origin of new Italians are currently Albania and Morocco.
In terms of their participation in the labour market, the communities analysed represent 7.2% of the total labour force in Italy. Most of them are men (63%). There are then significant differences within this group when it comes to employment: in 2022, the employment rate among TCN women stood at 43.6% (for Italian women this rises to 51.5%), over 30% lower than that of TCN men. Some communities - such as those from the Philippines, Ukraine, Moldova, Peru and Ecuador - have a higher proportion of women in employment, while communities from the Indian subcontinent and North Africa have both low female employment rates and high inactivity rates (the latter indicator exceeding 80% for Pakistani, Bangladeshi and Egyptian nationalities).
Several of the individual reports (such as those on Bangladeshi, Chinese, Nigerian, Albanian, Ukrainian, Egyptian, Indian, Moroccan, Tunisian and Peruvian communities) are also available in English on the Integrazione Migranti portal.
