Extending migrants’ rights but limiting long-term settlement: Migrant integration policy trends in EU and OECD countries between 2010 and 2019

International Migration Review logo

This paper presents newly collected data from the Migrant Integration Policy Index (MIPEX), which includes information on several different policy areas related to migrant integration in 27 EU countries and 9 other OECD countries between 2010 and 2019.

The data demonstrate that migrant integration policies have become more liberal - although not to a great extent - across EU countries, apart from in the areas of family reunion and permanent residence. The paper also shows that there has been a trend of convergence in integration policy across all countries examined, which varies in intensity across the different policy areas. While migrants’ rights have been extended, conclude the paper's authors, their long-term settlement has been limited.
