The Program Teranga aims to welcome immigrants into their new communities and to help them with their social and labour market integration. The initiative got its name from the word Teranga, which means Welcome in Wolof, the language used in Senegal. It emerged as an initiative of the Salesian Church of Vigo.

Project Goal

The JuanSoñador Foundation has kept the provision of reception and assistance services to immigrants at the core of the program since the very beginning. It aims to improve the social situation of immigrants in Spain. The Foundation has the view that in order to achieve the later goal, a welcoming culture must be developed and the social integration of immigrants into their new communities must be targeted through different initiatives and intervention tools. Considering that migrations have constituted the basis for our cultural and social enrichment, and no law should impose rigid stances that hinder the attempts of immigrants to live a more dignifying life. Therefore the Foundation, through the Program Teranga, fosters the welcoming of immigrants and provides them with social and job search support.

How it works

The program allowed the start of specific lines of work with immigrants through various projects. The Teranga Intercultural Center in Vigo was started in 2004 works with newly arrived immigrants. Its aim is to provide immigrants with the social and juridical tools required for their successful integration. The project focuses on three tasks:
- providing information, orientation, and advice;
- Training for socio-laboural insertion, with a focus on Spanish language skills;
- awareness-raising and volunteer opportunities in the city.
The Teranga host center for immigrants in Ourense opened in 2007, and it offers a temporary place to immigrants and their families who arrive to the city of Ourense and who are in a situation of vulnerability. They are given the skills and resources necessary for their progressive social and labour integration. It also provides other services such as services for children, training for social and labour market integration, and raising awareness of the social situation that immigrants face in their search for a better life among the population. The Teranga Labour Program was started in 2008, and while the office is located in Vigo, the services are available for all of Galicia. It works with both immigrants and businesses. It provides immigrants with information on the labour market and with a jobs database. It has also signed agreements with businesses to facilitate the hiring of immigrants, and follows-up on the situation of those hired under these agreements. A sociolaboural program was started in 2009 in A Coruña, with the aim to help with the social and labour market integration of immigrants.
