The primary objective of IZAN HARRERA is to enhance the social inclusion and psychosocial well-being of refugees and migrants in Gipuzkoa. Quantitatively, the project aims to reach at least 30 individuals and form 20 mentorship pairs. Qualitatively, it seeks to improve the mentees’ wellbeing, expand social networks, and dismantle cultural prejudices. The project operates within a context of increasing cultural diversity and aims to support refugees and migrants in their integration process by collaborating with local entities and community participation.

The project comprises 5 steps:

1. Selection and training of local mentor groups
2. Selection of refugee mentees
3. Pairing of mentors and mentees
4. Weekly follow-ups, including individual and group tutoring
5. Conclusion of each mentorship with a workshop focused on farewell and closure

In 2023, 16 mentorship pairs were formed. The mentees reported improved psychosocial wellbeing, increased self-esteem, and better integration. They expanded their social networks and gained better knowledge of community resources, enhancing their practical inclusion in areas such as language, employment, and housing. The project also strengthened community participation in solidarity and inclusion efforts.

The project employs both qualitative and quantitative evaluation methods. Indicators include mentee well-being, social network expansion, and community engagement. Success factors include the active involvement of local entities and the support of volunteer psychologists for complex cases.

Refugees and migrants in Gipuzkoa.

The project is funded by the Basque Government’s Directorate of Human Rights, Victims, and Diversity, the Gipuzkoa Provincial Council, Ikerlan, and Danobat. It involves collaboration with entities such as Zehar Errefuxiatuekin, Caritas, Cruz Roja, and Arrats.
