The project aims to help with their home work after school, and uses games (a form of non formal education) to help them interact with their peers without violence and disrespect. The project has facilities to fight digital illiteracy where the community can achieve basic computer skills in order to help them in their professional lives. In addition, the project team helps them finding a job or enrolling in school. The members of the community can also ask for help among the team members to fill forms of any nature.

Project Goal

The main challenge is to make the community aware of the potential of the project in order to help them to improve their lives. The main objective is to help the community in all fields of expertise of the project. The team expects that when the project ends, school absenteeism among 50 children aged between 9 and 15 years old is significantly reduced. Another goal is to help finding jobs and professional education among 210 children and to promote citizenship activities among 300 children.

Who benefits

There is a high illiteracy rate among the target population, high youth unemployment and a sedentary lifestyle. The team expects to reach out to 500 inhabitants among the population living in the neighborhood.

How it works

The team provides help to young kids in school activities, and also in non-formal educational activities. The youngsters also receive help in finding a job and can find diverse recreational activities and a digital centre in the project’s facilities. Those who attend IT classes receive a certification.

Results

The project reached a 50% rate of school success among the youngsters that attend the project’s activities, has managed to enrol 21 people in professional education and find a job for 10 people. Sixteen people received their certification in IT competences and 2 people started a business as entrepreneurs. The total number of participants reached 264 people.

Evaluation

The type of evaluation used is the registration of the participants in each activity, filling out queries, and through assiduity. The evaluation has not been made due to the late start of the project.

Funding and resources

The main source of funding is the Institute Padre António Vieira and Programa Escolhas (Choices Programme). The budget for the three years is 192.085,00 € and there are 5 workers.
