The main objective of the mentor project is to substantially improve the prospects for newly arrived immigrants to become self-sufficient. The newly arrived immigrant (adept) is introduced to a person already living in Sweden, with the same profession as him or her, who will function as a mentor. The mentor will introduce the adept to codes in the Swedish society as well as offer their work network. The purpose is also to inspire and spread knowledge about the methods and capabilities of the mentor project as well as to support and guide people into society by the interaction of professionals and non-profit-organizations.
Project Goal
The main objective of the project is to significantly improve the prospects for newly arrived migrants to become self-sufficient. The following goals are therefore that;
- At least 50% of the newcomers have started their own company, gained employment within their own profession, initiated supplementary training, or begun a traineeship within their own profession
- 90% of newcomers have increased their self-confidence and improve their potential.
- 90% have expanded their network of contacts with at least 50 persons who use Swedish as the main language.
- 90% have a CV in Swedish and can freely conduct a job interview in Swedish.
- 100% of mentors have received basic training in modern mentoring; developed their capability in consulting, active listening, and gained knowledge of how to guide his newcomer toward his or her own goals.
How it works
The methods used in the project are based on the project leaders training at the Mentor Academy and her experience from previous similar projects with a successful outcome. The project divided the participants into 7 groups of 3 up to 7 pairs with one mentor and one newcomer. Each group had from 6 to 9 common meetings for training with the mentor and newcomer together while some group meetings were only for the mentors. Each group meeting had a theme with theory and practical exercises, e.g. in the form of role-play. Between the group meetings, the pairs met separately or together with the project manager. One important part of the success of the project proved to be that the project leader acted as a supervisor for both the mentors and adepts, and had regular mail contact with the participants throughout the project period.
Results
The project leader conducted a evaluation of the project by using a simple assessment form which gave insight into how the participants experienced the project.
The words "developing", "understanding" and "useful" were most prevalent among the mentors. "Developing", "valuable" and "useful" were mostly used by the newcomers. Most participants indicated that their overall experience of the project was slightly above average, a few indicated that their experiences were above average and no one indicated it to have been below average.
Evaluation
Some experiences learned from this project were:
- The importance of all participants knowing their obligations from start and to agree on common responsibilities.
- It is important that the person's health situation is investigated before they start the project. Otherwise, their learning ability will be impaired and their health might worsen. The municipality and job centres who direct the newcomers to the project should inform individuals about this. The non-profit working mentors do not have knowledge and capacity to manage health related issues.
It should be ensured, when arranging for the project, that there are enough mentors by having a “mentor bank” with more mentors than might be needed.
Who benefits
The projects beneficiaries are:
- Newly arrived immigrants with work experience and/or education from his or her home country
- Rotary members and/or individuals from their network who on a non-profit basis desire, have the time, the right expertise and networks in order to be a guiding mentor to individuals within their own or related profession.
Funding and resources
- Funding came from The Migration Board through the County Administrative Board, Roslagen Saving Bank foundations as well as co-sponsoring from participating municipalities.
- The total budget was 820.000 SEC, and contained everything from facilities, documentation, refreshments and travel costs for consultants.
- The project Manager, the responsible for education and the administrator worked an average of 70/h/week and a Steering Group had monthly meetings. The Steering Group's participants: 2 from municipalities, 1 from the County Administrative Board, 1 from employment services, 1 from the Rotary, and the project manager.
- Not-for-profit mentors from Rotary also participated. The participation from these mentors as well as strong motivation from the actors involved was crucial for the project to succeed.
