The project “Make an impact” has had the aim to develop new methods for an introduction model for newly arrived schoolchildren and their parents by involving the parents in the introduction of their children. Many parents do experience the Swedish school to be far away from the “third parent” they’re used to from their country of origin.
Project Goal
Who benefits
How it works
- Involve parents in the introduction of newly arrived pupils
- Integrate experiences and knowledge from parents in the introduction programme
- Increase the knowledge among introduction handling officers and educationalists about the importance of parent involvement
Results
The results from the project have helped the school management and teachers to understand the scarcities of earlier introduction programmes. The use of interpreters is important in the contacts with the parents as well as the time aspect of the introduction programme.
The target group’s opinion about the project is mainly that this kind of parent-teacher contact is of excessive importance but also that dialogue with parents and the NGO Association of Parents of the Rya-school must be on equal terms.
Evaluation
Evaluation by Johannes Lunneblad based on interviews with the project team, teachers, handling officer and a representative from the NGO.
The school has about 360 students, 50 of them taking part in introduction for newly arrived migrants. The interviews with parents of those students have given the project group knowledge of their current situation and experience of different school systems. The results has been used to change (e.g. adapt) the introduction programme for newly arrived migrants.
Opportunities for the future:
- Involvement of parents on “teacher team”-meetings
- The use of interpreters
- More time to prepare the introduction programme in close relation with the parents – at least two weeks is suggested by the evaluation.
