The Artists Welcome initiative is part of the Department of Communication and Awareness of Malaga Acoge. It consists on exhibiting on the cover page of the Malaga Acoge’s Facebook (www.facebook.com/malagaacoge) work done on the subject of immigration by local artists from the city of Malaga (Andalusia Autonomous Community). These artists come from different disciplines: painting, photography, graphic design, computer graphics, poetry... This initiative shows the artistic works for periods of 15 days each, disseminating their work and raising awareness among the entity’s followers in the social network. All works can be seen here: http://malaga.acoge.org/artistas-acoge/ In October 2014 a physical exposition of all works carried out so far will be organized, with more than fifty artists involved. The Artists Welcome activity is included within the generic campaign 'All parts are important’; Malaga Acoge launched in late May 2012 and is focused on raising awareness on the importance of immigrants in Malaga’s society.
Project Goal
The project Artists Welcome arises for several reasons. One is to create a link between local artists from Malaga and the Malaga Acoge association. This is achieved through the voluntary participation of artists on the association’s channel of communication (i.e. their Facebook page). The intention of this collaboration is to display opinions, interpretations and understandings of immigration from an artistic point of view. Malaga Acoge proposes a series of general and specific topics to work on, but there is also absolute freedom for artists to choose their theme, format, discipline... Through the artistic works carried out under this project awareness raising is achieved on two levels. On the one hand, these works invite people that see them to reflect and to have a participative attitude. And, on the other hand, the artists themselves must have a critical attitude on the subject they are working on, and then they have to transpire this to the general population. Moreover, the dissemination that the artists do of their own works and those of other artists, enable a wider diffusion of the association itself, its work and, therefore, of the integration practices carried out. Similarly, as the work is renewed every 15 days on the Facebook page, it helps to create excitement about the project, to which gradually more artists from different disciplines are signing up. Every fortnight, an artist exhibits his work developed expressly for the cover of the Malaga Acoge Facebook page.
Who benefits
Society in general (level of awareness), and immigrants in particular (support for integration).
How it works
Every fortnight, an artist exhibits his work developed expressly for the cover of the Malaga Acoge Facebook page.
Results
So far an extensive reception has been achieved from the artists in Malaga. Contemporary artists, photographers, designers, painters,... all said yes to the proposal made by Malaga Acoge to participate in this project. The association and its activities and proposals are being known by more people through this initiative. In terms of dissemination, the project has had a good impact at the digital level (with publications in digital media and blogs) as well as news paper like this: http://issuu.com/malagaacoge/docs/artistasacogehttp://issuu.com/malagaacoge/docs/artistasacogecontra
