The project makes an extraordinary effort to prevent socially deprived children (including many ethnic minority children) from reaching a situation in which teachers can no longer adequately teach them. These are children who face such challenges that they do not acquire the social and educational skills to participate in society.
Project Goal
The aim is to establish a framework in which all relevant parties, including the social service, health personnel and the police meet in school in regular intervals, and relevant families are invited to come and be helped to secure a safer path for their child.
How it works
It is a two-year project, where 15 ’open school’ events are held each year (every other week). At these events socially deprived families meet relevant people form the social service, health personnel etc., but also voluntary organisations from their district. Families will also be able to acquire ’parent education’, where relevant topics concerning their childrens well-being are considered. A tool is developed where the method and results are described so that other schools can be inspired.
Results
Social workers, the police, health personnel, AKT-supervisors and teachers estimate a benefit to parents of 8,8 on a scale from 0 to 10, which is above the success criterion of 7,5. They believe that, to a great extent, parents have acquired knowledge about whom to contact, local programmes, have become better equipped to tackle the challenges of parenthood, and have become more active in creating a good life for their children. They also believe that ’open school’ has improved opportunities for several of the challenged families, who have become more open to the inter-disciplinary efforts made for their children, and have begun to engage more in their children’s social and school life. Furthermore, this assessment is shared by the parents themselves.
Evaluation
Families feel they are being helped and lower their guards against social authorities. The experts feel that the inter-disciplinary work helps and is efficient and that it makes sense and gives meaning to their work.
Who benefits
Children and parents at Rådmandsgade School who already experience social problems, making it impossible to keep up in school and children and families, where the teachers expect such difficulties to arise. It is estimated that 125 children and their families may benefit.
