Since 2010, Slovenian Philanthropy has been marking World Refugee Day (June 20) with the Migrant Film Festival. Every year, it offers a selection of insightful and provocative films that discuss current topics related to migration, asylum and refugees. A rich programme is created for every festival.
This year the festival was held for the eleventh time, two months after the usual date due to COVID-19 restrictions. In Ljubljana and eight other cities across Slovenia, screenings and accompanying events were organised, illuminating various faces of migration, asylum and the lives of refugees.

The Migrant Film Festival in Ljubljana took place between 7 and 10 September in Kinodvor, the Slovene Cinematheque, the Ground Floor and the Slovene Philanthropy. Visitors were also able to see film screenings at the Fruits of Society and partner organisations in Maribor, Murska Sobota, Ljutomer, }alec, Cerknica, Logatec, Metlika and rnomelj.
The festival had five focus areas this year: Walls of Colonialism, Portraits, Mobile Homes of Women's Migration, Views from Europe and Youth Beyond Borders. Viewers were shown 14 films from 7 different countries, as well as a set of short films made by young people from Slovenia.
The festival hosted eight filmmakers and special guests in its accompanying events. For these, the focus was on current stories related to global politics, the reality of arrival to a new environment and the weaving of social ties. Through various stories and guest contributions, these events called for reflection on current migration policy and offered a different perspective on people trapped in refugee camps, living in inhumane conditions or disappearing somewhere along the way.
