On 5 June the Government of the Slovak Republic approved the Ministry of the Interior's proposal to amend Act No. 480/2002 Coll. on Asylum, which pertains to the asylum procedure and the provision of temporary shelter, with the aim of improving and streamlining processes related to providing protection to third-country nationals (TCNs).
Housing allowance granted to TCNs will now only be provided under certain conditions, including those related to family relationships and property ownership in the territory of the Slovak Republic.
The housing allowance will be provided for period of 120 days following the initial granting of temporary protection in the Slovak Republic. This period can be extended if:
- members of a household are receiving material needs assistance;
- the recipient has a severe disability and is receiving a subsidy for humanitarian aid support;
- the recipient has reached the age of 65;
- the recipient is a single parent caring for a child under 5 years old or is personally caring for a child under 5 years old based on a court decision.
The Ministry of Transport will no longer provide accommodation allowance, according to the Act on the Support of Tourism.
The bill will be subject to expedited legislative proceedings, and is expected to come into effect on 1 July.
