Migrant employment continues to rise in Slovakia

Flag of Slovakia

According to recent statistical data on the employment of foreigners in Slovakia, published by the The Central Office of Labour, Social Affairs and Family of the SR, the number of migrants working in Slovakia is increasing significantly. As of August 2022 there are 83 000 migrants employed in the country, which represents an increase of more than 14 000 people since August 2021.

Longer-term migrants in the country tend to be third-country nationals, with Ukrainians making up the majority. Recent military conflict in Ukraine has only served to contribute to this. In August 2022 approximately 30 900 Ukrainians were working in Slovakia, and this number has been continuously increasing. The second most represented nationality is Serbian, with approximately 9 400 thousand nationals employed, followed by Romanians (7 200 employed). The majority of foreigners work in the west of Slovakia, an area that offers the best employment opportunities. Three in every ten foreigners - 24 200 in total - working in Slovakia work in the Bratislava and Trnava regions, and 5 400 are employed in the Western Slovakia region.

The upwards trend in migrant employment in the country is expected to continue, thanks to increasing reliance of certain industrial areas on migrant workers.
