Lithuania: New arrivals from Ukraine exempt from language requirements for employment

Flag of Lithuania

The Lithuanian Government announced in March that for the next two years, those arriving in Lithuania after fleeing the Russian invasion of Ukraine will be exempt from language requirements for certain jobs once granted temporary protection.

Language proficiency is usually a mandatory condition of employment in numerous sectors in Lithuania, such as teaching, but this has now changed. When it comes to employing those with temporary protection, it will now be up to employers to decide whether the professional duties of the role can be performed with no or with limited command of the Lithuanian language.

As of 4 March, all those that have fled Ukraine since the Russian invasion are eligible to apply for temporary protection in Lithuania, as well as those Ukrainians legally residing in Lithuania before the military aggression began. This resolution grants them temporary protection for one year, in line with the EU's Temporary Protection Directive.

Lithuania's Ministry of Social Security and Labour announced that, if necessary, temporary protection status can be extended for an additional year. To mitigate the risk of social and economic exclusion, those that have arrived from Ukraine and been granted temporary protection are entitled to social assistance from the Lithuanian state.
