Greece: Asylum seekers, refugees and migrants - key numbers

Title

121 467 people lodged an asylum application in Greece between 2013 and 2017. Most came from Syria, Pakistan and Afghanistan. They are accommodated in one of UNHCR rented apartments, hotels and host families. 87,3% of the 19.106 available places was occupied on 31 October 2017. Around 38% of applicants received a positive decision between 2013 and 2017. The majority of these beneficiaries of international protection are Syrian or Palestinian.  These data and many more are extracted from ELIAMEP's latest infographic. 

Other residence permits

According to the estimations of the National Center for Social Solidarity (EKKA), the number of unaccompanied minors in Greece is currently up to 2.950 children. 42% are from Pakistan and 22% from Afghanistan. Women from Albania, Russia, Georgia and Ukraine are the main beneficiaries of residence permits issued for family reasons. Most of the residence permits for employment reasons are issued to migrants coming from Albania, the Philippines, Georgia and Egypt.

Employment

Non-EU nationals living in Greece have the same employment rate as Greek nationals but a much higher unemployment rate. The data provided by the largest Social Security Organisation (IKA, 2016) show that most migrants are employed in 4 sectors: hotels and restaurants, construction, manufacturing and wholesale and retail trade. They mainly do unskilled or manual jobs, provide services and work as salespersons in stores and outdoor markets.

Language knowledge

43,8% of migrants living in Greece are fluent Greek speakers, 29% have an intermediate level and 3,4% have a basic knowledge. Greek is the mother tongue of 10,2% of migrants.
