Denmark: New website launched to promote reception of refugee children

Flag of Denmark

Save the Children in Denmark launched a new website providing information and material for volunteers and professionals who are welcoming newcomer refugee children.

On the site, experts from the organisation share their experiences and knowledge of how to welcome children who have fled to Denmark. This includes children currently applying for asylum as well as children who have already been granted a permit to stay, under one of the special laws for Afghans or Ukrainians, as refugees, or as family reunited being reunited with refugees.

The integration of children is often overlooked, with many assuming it will occur naturally when the child enters kindergarten or school. Often, though, newcomer children are traumatised, lonely and frustrated, and can struggle to integrate. It takes specific effort from both professional and volunteer adults to support them, as well as work by their peers to understand and include them. With this in mind, the new website - available only in Danish - offers:

  • information about free, one-day courses - designed for professionals who work with children who have escaped war or other crisis situations - run by Save the Children in municipalities;
  • educational materials - focusing on how to strengthen a sense of community and create a feeling of belonging for each pupil - for 1.-3. grade and 4.-6. grade classes;
  • booking of free counselling over the phone, with those with expertise in the care and inclusion of refugee children.

On the website volunteers can also find advice on self-care when working with children who have had traumatic experiences, information about culture meetings, guidelines on how to build good relationships with newcomer children, and some practical ideas on communicating with children who have not yet learnt the local language.
