Cyprus: Eurostat reveals statistics on asylum

Untitled

Cyprus has granted asylum to 1600 Syrians, 65 Iraqis and 60 stateless individuals during the year 2015, according to Eurostat. This number represents 85,5% of the total asylum seekers’ applications submitted in Cyprus.

However, conditions for refugees in Cyprus are “still a far cry from EU standards”. Despite the increase in numbers, asylum seekers are reluctant to actually reside in the country given their settlement in remote locations, with difficult access to the country’s urban areas, the Kofinou Centre stated.

Cyprus will continue to support refugees, as stated by Cypriot Minister of Foreign Affairs. The Cypriot government will give 2,3 million euros for refugees who are accommodated in Jordan and Lebanon, as well as a financial support of 500.000 euros for Master studies in Cypriot universities for Syrian refugees.
