Baynana, the first magazine by refugee journalists in Spain

Title

Baynana (an Arabic word meaning 'among us' in English) is the first bilingual magazine in Arabic and Spanish, created and managed by Syrian refugees in Spain. Since April 2021 the magazine has published 86 pieces of media content, 55 in Arabic and 27 in Spanish, including video reports, interviews and articles.

The content of the magazine varies. Items range from interviews with young Arab influencers, to personal stories from such individuals as Malak Zungi (who helps refugees to integrate in Spain by supporting their professional development as chefs), to national news and current affairs articles. Currently, the Baynana team is working on a substantial investigation into the 'invisible borders' facing migrants attempting to access the public health system in Spain, in the context of the country's COVID-19 vaccination campaign.

Baynana's target audience includes Arabic-speaking people such as refugees and migrants living in Spain and Europe, Arabic-speaking people living outside Spain who are interested in Spanish / European affairs, and Spanish-speaking people (particularly Spanish people themselves) who are interested in developing their understanding of migrants and refugees living in Spain and Europe.

The magazine is currently promoting a crowdfunding campaign to build support and in so doing ensure its continuity. Find out more about this here.
