In line with European and national law, every child has the right to education in Greece. Activities put in place to safeguarding the right to education of young refugees entering Greece is the focus of this report edited by the Scientific Committee in Support of Refugee Children of the Ministry of Education. The report assesses the Refugee Education Project carried out during the school year 2016-2017 and communicates proposals for the next school year.
The report contains an introduction to the situation of refugees in Greece and quantitative data on the refugee (children) population during the period March 2016-March 2017. It also presents the Education Plan set up for 2016-2017 and its two important innovations: Reception Facilities for Refugee Education (RFRE) and Refugee Education Coordinators (REC).
The authors assess the problems related to the operation of RFREs and the role of the RECs, highlighting good practices and the necessity for the Ministry of Education to cooperate with other bodies, including local authorities, the Ombudsman for Children, International Organisations and Non-Governmental Organisations.
The second part of the report focuses on proposals for 2017-2018 and introduces general objectives for preschool education (5-6 year-old), mandatory education (7-15 year-old) and non-mandatory secondary education (over 15 years). In general, the plan put emphasis on sport and art activities, as well as technology for all age groups. Training of teachers and educational staff, the establishment of a system of certification to monitor the progress of refugee children in the various levels of education, as well actions to include parents in the school life are also highlighted.
