UNHCR Slovenia published teaching materials for primary and secondary school teachers on how to teach (about) refugees.
These materials - published in the Slovene language - provide examples and instructions on teaching basic information about refugees, covering such issues as the structural causes of migration, basic terminology ('asylum seeker', 'refugee', 'third-country national', etc.), and the procedures for obtaining international or subsidiary protection status. They also provide information on integration policy in Slovenia, including on education policy as it relates to integration.
Advice is also given on the teaching of refugees themselves, highlighting the fact that these individuals are often particularly vulnerable because they are traumatised, do not speak the Slovene language and are in an economically weak position. The challenge is not only in knowing how best to approach refugee individuals in teaching, but also in sensitising local pupils and their parents to ensure tolerance in schools and school communities.
The various materials can be accessed and downloaded online here.
