The Special Secretariat for the Protection of Unaccompanied Minors, with support from the National Centre for Social Solidarity, published a report on the situation of unaccompanied children in Greece.
The report estimates that as of March 2023 there are 2 374 unaccompanied children in Greece. It gives the following key statistics:

- 1 711 of the children are living in accommodation centres; 258 in semi-independent living apartments (SIL); 158 in emergency accommodation facilities; 230 in reception and identification centres; 17 in accommodation facilities for asylum seekers
- 39 of the children are accompanied by an adult who, by law, is not their primary guardian
Additional data is kept for unaccompanied children from Ukraine, and the above numbers include 3 unaccompanied children and 9 children with 3 caretakers from Ukraine.
The total number of places for unaccompanied children in Greece currently comprises 2 309 in standard accommodation structures and 240 in emergency accommodation structures.
The Special Secretariat for the Protection of Unaccompanied Minors was created in 2020. Its main responsibilities are the management of accommodation requests, the relocation of unaccompanied minors, and the supervision and evaluation of accommodation centres and supervised apartments. It also coordinates services and agencies in order to ensure the protection of unaccompanied children and to plan and implement actions aimed at promoting the social integration of unaccompanied children. Within the framework of the secretariat a national emergency response mechanism has also been created, which includes a telephone line for the identification of children in need. Children are identified by mobile units and receive assistance to ensure their protection and access to services.
