This event forms part of the larger annual Refugee Week Malta festival, to be celebrated from 18 - 25 June 2023.
The theme of this year's festival is compassion, and within this there is specific focus on promoting solidarity with LGBTQI+ refugees and asylum seekers in Malta. Malta is considered to have some of the best LGBTQI+ laws in Europe, however as of yet there are no policies dedicated specifically to the protection of LGBTQI+ refugees and asylum seekers. In some of the origin countries Malta considers 'safe', for example, LGBTQI+ people still face institutionalised discrimination, imprisonment and forced labour. These countries include Algeria, Bangladesh, Benin, Botswana, Chile, Egypt, Ghana, Jamaica, Morocco, Senegal and Tunisia.
As part of the festival, the collaborating organisations are inviting the public to a March for Peace on 20 June (World Refugee Day). The march will begin at 18h in Pjazza San Gorg, Valletta, and continue towards Freedom Square, in front of Parliament. Here attendees will hear from speakers from the refugee community, who will talk about peace, compassion, and the need to acknowledge the 'unsafe' countries from which many people in the LGBTQI+ community have fled.
The main entities contributing to this year's programme of events are Spark15, Friends of the Earth, Geġwiġija and the Malta International Arts Festival. The festival has been endorsed by Counterpoints Arts and the coordinators of Refugee Week UK, and is generously supported by the Association for Justice, Equality and Peace, Medina Asset Management, RiskCap International Ltd, AQA Capital, Melita Foundation, APS Bank, MIB Insurance, P Cutajar, Migrant Commission, Flutter, Quicklets, Team Humanity Norway, Moviment Graffitti, Veg Box, Regjun Port and Valletta Local Council.
