Poland: Forced migrants in local labour markets

Flag of Poland

The Centre of Migration Research at the University of Warsaw, in cooperation with the Union of Polish Metropolises and the Embassy of Switzerland in Poland, is organising a webinar on facilitating forced migrants' access to and integration within local labour markets.

During the webinar, panellists engaged in labour market services for forced migrants from Ukraine to Poland will first discuss the main challenges these migrants experience. Next, panellists with expertise in migrant labour market integration in other countries will discuss the most successful tools they use, which could be useful for Polish cities.

During the first two and a half months since the Russian invasion of Ukraine on 24 February 2022, almost 6 million people fled Ukraine, with many arriving in Poland. Polish cities, NGOs and ordinary residents are facing a challenge unprecedented in Europe’s post-war history in addressing the needs of these displaced people. Large cities and, increasingly, small towns in Poland are learning how to respond to the needs of a growing population of 3.2 million forced migrants from Ukraine, providing them with shelter, education, employment, access to the healthcare system and social services. This series of CMR webinars, 'Migration and Cities: Managing the crisis', looks at major challenges experienced by Polish local administrations, NGOs and other stakeholders who serve forced migrants and seeks to identify replicable solutions that have previously worked well in other contexts.
